Making Sense of Data
Making Sense of Data is envisioned as the fifth of six Junior Youth texts that address mathematical and scientific concepts. It seeks to enhance the capacity of young people to draw conclusions about the world around them by using numerical data. Its ten lessons follow the story of Etuate, a fifteen-year-old high school student, in his quest to understand the negative social forces that contribute to challenges facing his school and his neighborhood. He enters into an ongoing conversation with his older cousin Fatai, who helps him appreciate how statistical information can provide some insight into the questions he raises. Its ten lessons follow the story of Etuate, a fifteen-year-old high school student, in his quest to understand the negative social forces that contribute to challenges facing his school and his neighborhood. Through the readings and the exercises, young readers begin to recognize that the investigation of reality requires the ability to draw upon numerical data, but they also become aware of certain pitfalls. The study of the text should help young readers understand that they, like Etuate, should not only learn to become increasingly scientific in the methods they use but also develop the necessary spiritual perception that would enable them to identify the underlying causes of the problems their communities face.

What is a Junior Youth Group?
The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Programme is a three-year programme for 12-15 year-olds which fosters a positive transition from childhood to adolescence. Junior youth engage by joining or forming a group, which often comprises 5-10 young people in a given locality, and usually meets at least weekly.
Participants learn to identify the needs of their community and to find ways to respond to them through increasingly complex and meaningful acts of service. They study together a series of modules which can provide them with the elements of a conceptual framework that will guide their choices and actions as they mature into adults. Purposeful social, sport and artistic activities also constitute a key element of the programme. See here for more information.
